Bob and Shelly Motzko announced today the “Mack’s 18 Scholarship” program for students at the University of Minnesota, which will be given away at every home men’s hockey game during the 2022-23 season.

The $1,000 scholarship is in honor of their son, Mack Motzko, who was killed in 2021, and wore the number 18 during his playing days.

“This fall would have been Mack’s freshman year in college and Shelly and I wanted to carry on the legacy of our son and his caring for others,” Coach Motzko said.

“Mack had a passion for college hockey and we felt that paying it forward to students who support college hockey, and specifically Gopher Hockey, was a tremendous way to keep Mack’s spirit alive.”

At each of the Gopher’s 18 regular-season men’s hockey games this season at 3M Arena at Mariucci, a current University of Minnesota student will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Exact details of the give-a-way will be shared at the first home game Oct. 1
